Print Server Software
Print server software allows shops to offer convenient services to clients, enabling
them to submit jobs remotely, specify quantities and special directions and arrange
for a delivery date. In simple terms, server software provides end users with the
ability to select a shop's printer from their own menu, preview their documents
and approve the job.
For print shops, servers provide not only convenience, but they can also increase
business volume. If clients have the ability to select professional document creation
with just a couple quick keystrokes, they're likely to use it more often than not.
However, many of the companies that provide this software don't make it cheap or
easy to maintain. In fact, shops can expect to pay thousands in initial costs on
top of monthly licensing fees. If the print server software needs to be updated,
the shop will need to have it manually reinstalled. Not only that, but their clients
will all need to add the updates as well.
Until recently, only about 10 percent of shops in operation were able to afford
these remote delivery drivers--mostly big chains backed by corporate coffers. In
effect, the little guy was slowly being squeezed out because he couldn't afford
to keep up with these technologies.
